It’s that time of year when we all vow to do in 2015 the things we didn’t manage to get done in 2014.

Many photographers and video makers will have already started making preparations for the upcoming year, so while you’re in the mood to refresh, review and re-evaluate, it makes sense to look at your insurance policy and make sure it’s enough to protect your business.

Insurance is often bypassed for the more ‘exciting’ things like new equipment and upcoming projects, however, if you avoid it for too long you could find yourself liable or out of pocket.

Follow our New Year’s checklist to make sure you start 2015 in the best way possible and avoid any costly mistakes…

Back up

Backing up your data couldn’t be simpler, yet so many people fail to do so and end up losing valuable data.

One of the cheapest and easiest options for backing up images is online storage. Cloud storage provides you with a much bigger safety net than memory cards and external hard drives, allowing you to safely back up all your images online, meaning no more panic about technology failing and letting you down.

Security

The new year is also a good time to make sure your anti-virus and anti-malware programs are up to date. Once you’re caught up, make sure you schedule weekly backups and software updates throughout the coming year.

While you’re at it, write down all the serial numbers for your camera equipment, TVs, appliances and anything else worth repairing.

Insurance

Last but not least, don’t forget your insurance.

The New Year is the perfect time to take stock and prepare for anything that could potentially harm your business in the upcoming months.

On a basic level you’ll need three types of insurance as a photographer – equipment cover, public liability (PL) and professional indemnity (PI) but you may want to re-evaluate your cover and ensure you have all the policies you need at the right level of cover.

So there we go. A little planning and organisation can help you stay protected and focused for the months ahead.

We wish everyone a Happy New Year!
