Professional photography degrees, worth it?

As another host of students prepare to start universities across the UK, a significant number will be studying for photography degrees.

Although photography degrees have been available for years, they still cause some debate as to whether they’re worth doing, especially with the increase in fees meaning most students finish university in a huge amount of debt.

People in favour say such degrees give transferable skills that can be used across a number of professions as a graduate, not just in becoming a photographer. Others say photography degrees don’t prepare students for the commercial world, by failing to teach all the additional skills needed to make a living out of photography. This means the ability to network, sell your work and of course, get professional photography insurance! Some say, working as an assistant to a professional photographer is a far better route into the profession as you’re learning on the job and earning a wage at the same time.
